The Evolution of Science Fiction Essay -- Literature

Regardless of decades between their works, the likenesses between H.G. Wells and P.K. Dick are various and incorporate the way that the two creators were a long ways comparatively radical, had goals with respect to the universe and a future electronic period to come, had a subject rotating around a far off planet, and tested mankind. Both sci-fi creators were past their time. Wells had the capacity of â€Å"lifting up our fathers’ hearts with trusts, energizing them with the inclination that another world was at the purpose of being conceived and they were to acquire itâ€Å" (Dickson 17). All through the entirety of his works, P.K. Dick â€Å"focused on passing on reality of his many-faceted dreams without respect for basic desires and classification conventions† (Mackey 128). It is said that â€Å"knowledge of Dick’s account is fundamental to a comprehension of his work† (Umland 2). This also is like Wells. The two creators had entrancing existences an d each discovered their own special method to fuse their occasions and enthusiasm into their fills in as exhibited by their different books and short stories. So as to completely see each creators perspectives, style, and in particular to build up ethos, one should initially comprehend the creators life. Dick and Wells were extraordinarily impacted by their general surroundings. Regardless of whether it be clear or not, Dick incorporated his background into his books. He additionally included his very own considerable lot individual enthusiasm into the book. Wells works were for the most part impacted by his own perspectives, sentiments, and intrigue. It is anything but difficult to accept that a book was composed essentially off a smart thought in any case, there is frequently more to it. A hidden intrigue, an endeavored degree, a startling experience. Creating Balanced Budget Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Making Balanced Budget - Assignment Example On the off chance that the expenses are expanded, at that point there will be swelled figures and the unevenness will keep being experienced. One of the methods of executing this progression is that all government use puts something aside for the installments on the obligations should be solidified to bring down levels, for example, under 10% of the first year (Smith and Hou, 2013). Subsequently, decrease of the consumption as portrayed is considered the best strategy for lessening the negative adjusts in the financial plan. Territories Requiring Increase and DecreaseFrom a logical viewpoint, the best issue in the spending begins at where consumptions are referenced. For this situation, all the qualities, both overhauled and real are negative (Heun, 2014). That implies this is the segment that should be truly cut. Exacting adjusted spending prerequisites should be organized with the goal that abundance spending is controlled however much as could be expected. Consider the complete co nsumption for the year 2013 working at - 3803.30. It implies a significant part of the use was obtained and this makes more obligation quite a long time after year which isn't useful for the eventual fate of the nation and the residents. This is acknowledged through the legislature having a predefined pace of consumption for each office recorded in the spending plan. On the off chance that 10% cut is forced on all areas, at that point it implies that all the costs will be cut by a similar rate (Smith and Hou, 2013). The other area that should be taken a gander at is the incomes segment. For this situation, it is important that the whole income segment relies upon charges and obligations.

A Critique of the relationship between power and desire in Foucaults Essay - 1

A Critique of the connection among force and want in Foucaults investigations of the Repressive Hypothesis - Essay Example Sexuality was step by step partitioned into littler pockets of want, and a few inclinations separated as ‘perversions’. Simultaneously, the morals of the confession booth caused it to appear to be important to break down and judge each sexual inclination; power was made along these lines to serve the audience; in return the teller increased an arrangement of information, and the arrival of talk. Force stayed connected to sexuality through talk and the significance of information. The eighteenth and nineteenth century saw the characterization of women’s bodies as ‘hysterical’, children’s bodies as ‘innocent’, family bodies as ‘ritual’ and ‘social’ and unusual bodies as ‘medical’. â€Å"A sexuality without sex†: Pedophilia and the issue of constraint in the present age. Women's activists and Foucault: issues and feelings. Male-suppression, picked sexuality, and the issues of sexual freedo m developments; insubordination and show: is there a sexual contrast? Controlling the body. End. Michel Foucault has gotten one of the most compelling of the French thinkers of the twentieth century. While Foucault has been associated with both the postmodernist and post-structuralist developments, he was fundamentally a social scholar and history specialist, much the same as Lawrence Stone, in spite of the fact that Foucault worked more on the transaction of thoughts, while Stone focused more upon the effect of social changes on family, sexual connections, and society on the loose. While some may wish to examine their kindred people and as ‘does such a mind-bending concept as human instinct exist?’, Foucault rather thinks upon how the possibility of human instinct has cooperated with different pieces of society. So as to really appreciate what it is that Foucault is stating about force and want inside suppression, and (much harder) comprehend what he implies by these terms, the peruser must make them comprehend of Foucault’s

The Structure of an Outline Format For Research Paper

The Structure of an Outline Format For Research PaperThe outline format for a research paper is very important in ensuring that your work stands out. It should provide you with the basis for understanding the structure of your project and all the content you will need to incorporate into it.An outline format for a research paper is a very important tool, which is why it is required. It gives you a strong overview of your project and all of the materials you will be using in it. This allows you to cut and paste specific pieces of information into sections and to add definitions of terms that are not relevant to your thesis or dissertation. It also makes it easier to follow. It is often recommended that when writing a research paper, you create an outline in a notebook or a spreadsheet. This provides you with a general starting point so that you can work your way through the paper from the beginning to the end. By starting at the beginning, you have more of a foundation on which to buil d and it allows you to look at all of the details of your thesis and explore further. While it is good to write an outline format for a research paper, it is also important to keep it simple. You don't want to overwhelm yourself with too much information, this will reduce your chances of successfully completing your project. Instead you should focus on providing the most important information first and then proceed to the rest.If you decide to use an outline format for a research paper, it is important to note that this does not need to be a full outline. In fact, you might not even need it. It is recommended, however, that you have one in place before you begin working on the paper. This will allow you to quickly see if you have done something that needs to be changed or modified before you proceed to the rest of the project. An outline format for a research paper should include several sections. The first section should be a complete list of your materials and your references. This should include any that you use for example a bibliography, an index and a table of contents. All of these items will help to make your research project easier to understand and will also make it easier to search through. The next section of the outline format for a research paper should include a list of topics that you plan to research in depth. You should then detail what you will be writing about and any supporting material that you will use. This will help you create a clear structure and a narrative structure for your work.

Summer Law School Reading List for 1Ls

If you enjoy reading and would like suggestions for legal-themed books before you begin your first year, you’ll find a summer law school reading list for 1Ls below. If you want to check out some other reading list suggestions, check out these lists from the ABA:  The  25 Greatest Law Novels Ever  and  30 Lawyers Pick 30 Books Every Lawyer Should Read.   Sometimes before law school it can be fun to get excited about the law. And what better way to do that then reading some quality fiction and non-fiction. This list wont necessarily make you an excellent law student, but it will get you excited about the law and also entertain you while you are relaxing over the summer.   But before we dive into the list of things to read this summer, a note on what not to read -- law school textbooks and supplements. Trust me, you will have plenty of time to read them in law school. I wouldnt worry about the substantive law during your pre-law summer. Instead, think about working on the skills needed to  make you the best law student you can be.   Legal Fiction   The Paper Chase  by John Jay Osborn Jr.  This book, which is also a well-known legal film, follows the story of James Heart who attends Harvard Law School. You will watch him struggle in class, study for exams and fall in love. (Little known fact, the author is now a law professor himself. I have taken his class and he is not as intimidating as Prof. Kingsfield in the book!)Billy Budd  by Herman MelvilleBilly Budd is about a sailor on a British Warship. But, when he is falsely accused of mutiny he strikes back, killing another person on the ship. He is tried at sea and the book takes you through the case.  To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper LeeOne of my favorite-all-time books. The book highlights Atticus Finch who is a lawyer that has inspired new lawyers and law students for generations. If you didnt read it in school, pick up a copy today (or watch the movie which is also excellent).  The Firm by John GrishamMitch McDeere is recruited as a high paid associate at a law firm, but he learns he is actually working for a crime family. If you would rather, you can also check out the movie.A Time to Kill  by John GrishamIf you are interested in the death penalty, you might enjoy this book. This is John Grishams first novel and many think his best. There is also a movie if you would rather have a movie night.  Presumed Innocent by  Scott TurowThis is Turows first novel about a prosecutor accused of murdering his colleague. There is political intrigue, legal maneuvering and a quality ending.  Defending Jacob  by William Landay  The author is a prosecutor-turned-novelist. He takes the transcript of a trial and turns it into a very riveting story (which is not an easy thing to do). I actually listened to it as a book-on-take during a road trip and I thought the story was excellent!   Non-Fiction   A Civil Action by Jonathan HarrThe book discusses a toxic tort case in Massachusetts and gives you a window into how this type of litigation works. You might have also seen the move about this case too.Becoming Justice Blackmun  by Linda GreenhouseThis book discusses the mysterious world of the Supreme Court.  One L by Scott TurowA well known account of a first year law student at Harvard Law. I will warn you, it might stress you out about your 1L experience. You have been warned (and really, 1L year isnt that bad).  Personal History by Katharine Graham  Not necessarily about the law, but if you are interested in the press and freedom of the press, you will be interested in the later chapters of this book.  My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor  This is a nice read about Justice Sotomayor of the United States Supreme Court. Her book is honest and interesting for those just beginning their law school  Mindset by Carol Dweck  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹This is a fantastic book that has noth ing to do with law school, but also everything to do with law school. This book teaches you about two different mindsets. One that can really help you be successful in law school and one that will stand in your way of success. Which one will you choose?

The Role Of Dea Is A Linear Programming Methodology...

The related research uses a variety of variables. Based on the nature of DEA, the number of variables in the model affects the results. Given imperfect data, researchers often must make tradeoffs in selecting input and output variables. In this research, in order to verify the stability of the DEA model, a stability test is conducted by changing the number of inputs and outputs. To get a fuller picture, four models are developed for this test. Spearman correlation coefficients are calculated to assess the impact of the variation. DEA is a linear programming methodology measuring the relative performance and efficiency of multiple DMUs when the production process is composed of a difficult structure of multiple inputs and outputs [38]. A†¦show more content†¦Details of the linear form of a CRS model may be found in Chapter 2 of Cooper [39]. The dual of the linear model reduces the number of constraints and makes the linear problem easier to solve. It is given below [39, 40]: where is the measure of the efficiency of DMUo, the DMU in the set of DMUs rated relative to the others; and is the dual weight assigned to DMUs. Constant returns to scale are assumed in the above model. When the constraint is added, we have a variable return to scale model [6]. The DEA estimates of is an indicator of efficiency. It measures the distance between the observed input/output combination and the efficiency frontier. The Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) is based on ideas similar to the DEA, but MPI allows comparisons between two periods. Assume the technology at is implied in a set , where all feasible are included, i.e., .The output distance function, based on , is . The distance function increases output as much as possible for given input and technology at time . Following Fà ¤re et al. [41] and Boisso et al. [42], MPI is defined as: Rearranging the terms in formula (4), following Fà ¤re et al. [41], we obtain the subsequent formula: The MPI is thus decomposed into two elements, efficiency change , and technological change . The distance functions in the MPI can be calculated by linear programming methods similar to those used in the DEA. Abortion Essay Introduction Example For Students

Abortion Essay Introduction Abortion is one of the most controversial issues around, and is an issue that will never be agreed upon. By bringing morals into the question of whether it should be legal to have abortions, this issue has been elevated to a higher level. By some people, it is no longer looked at as a question of choice but as a question of morality, and these concepts have led to a full-blown debate over something that really should not be questioned. Every woman in America has the right to decide what to do with their bodies. No government or group of people should feel that they have the right to dictate to a person what path their lives should take. People who say that they are pro-life are in effect no more than anti-choice. These pro-lifers want to put the life and future of a woman into the hands of the government. At the time, which the fetus is aborted, it is not a being with personality. Anyone would agree to the fact that it is alive and human, however, it is also true that it is no more a person than a tree would be. Though the fetus may be a large grouping of human cells, with the potential to become more than that, at the state of development which the fetus has reached at the time of abortion, it is not a person and therefore should not be looked at as such. When does the fetus become a person? Though the legal moment at which the fetus is looked at for the first time as a human being is deemed to be at the instant that it is born, the difference between an eight- week premature infant and a 24-week-old fetus is virtually nonexistent. So should the fetus be regarded as a person, or should the premature baby still be regarded as a fetus? Thus arises the statement by the pro-life side of the argument that should not the fact that we are unable to pinpoint with absolute certainty the preci se moment when a fetus suddenly develops a personality means that we ought to do away with the process until such a time that we are able to ascertain that persons are not being murdered. This argument will go on for quite some time, and is but one in a list of reasons why the pro-life supporters take the standpoint that they do. The principle that every human being has the right to life is another key issue in this heated debate. The pro-life movement also firmly holds to the belief that regardless of whether or not the fetus is a person, the simple fact that it is a human being is reason enough to allow it to keep living. They argue that the severely mentally handicapped do not meet the definition of a person in extreme cases, and yet we would not see them exterminated, as they become a burden to society. This argument is a truly difficult one to combat. Though the fetus may be a member of the human species, is it always better to bring a child into the world, even if it is unwant ed, unloved, etc. . . .?What if the birth of the child would result in the death of the mother, or would severely endanger her health? Is it still more important that the child be born? What if the child was the product of a sexual assault? Should the mother who, through no fault of her own, is now carrying this child be forced to give birth to it? In the cases of rape and incest the very idea of being forced to have the child of the womans abuser is repulsive. There are also cases when a womans health is put in jeopardy by having a child at all, forcing such a woman to bring a child to term, would be no less than attempted murder. .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 , .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .postImageUrl , .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 , .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:hover , .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:visited , .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:active { border:0!important; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:active , .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567 .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4ffd55deba1f1ecf306af58edd5c8567:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Dark Overtones And Their Contrasts In My Antonia EssayThe simple fact that the fetus is alive does not, and should not; give it precedence over the mother. The mother will be the person who must carry it for nine months, and who must give birth to it. She is also the one who will have to care for it after it is born, so should her desires not take priority over a being that is not much more than a mass of cells, which more closely resembles a tadpole than a human? The right of the woman to choose whether or not she wishes to continue the pregnancy should be precisely that, the choice of the woman. If she deems it necessary to abort the fetus because of her economic standin g, then so be it. If, contrary to the warnings of her obstetrician, she wishes to carry the child to term, then that is her decision. It should not be tested by pressures from any other outside influences or factors, aside from the medical advice of her physician. It should not be the place of government or society to impose and enforce individual moral decision. It should be left up to those who are directly involved and responsible, and not to those who have the option of walking away at any given point. A misconception held is that people who are pro-choice are actually pro-abortion. Many people that support the right of a woman to decide what to do with her own body may be personally against abortions. But, that does not mean that they think the government should be able to pass laws governing what females do with their bodies. Pro-choice people simply believe that it is the right of a woman to assess her situation and decide if a baby would be either beneficial or deleterious to her present life. People that are against abortions do not take many things into consideration. One thing they do not consider is how the life of a teenager may be ruined if they are not given the option of abortion. Another thing not considered is the serious family strife that will result if a baby is forced to be born. Pro-lifers are adamant about their beliefs and think that they have an answer to every situation. The common anti-abortion argument has many insurmountable faults. Basically, it states th at fetuses are people with a right to life and that abortion is immoral because it deprives them of this right. The first problem with this argument is that no consensus has been reached regarding whether or not a fetus is a person. It cannot be proven that a fetus is a person, much less that they have a right to life, and therefore it cannot be said that abortion is unethical because it deprives them of this right. Pro-lifers who base their arguments upon the religious ensoulment concept must realize that morality and religion are two separate entities. From this conclusion it follows that the fetuses are not being deprived of their right to life because they do not possess that right. To simply say that the fetus is person and therefore has the right not to be killed is insufficient. Only the members of the moral community have full and equal moral rights. The potential of the fetus to become a member of the moral community is not enough for them to be granted the rights of member ship. Since it is irrational to ascribe moral obligations and responsibilities to a fetus is it then not irrational to grant them full moral rights. Radical pro-lifers fight for the lives of children and then go and destroy the lives of abortion doctors. Does this mean that they place more value on the life of a bundle of cells and tissues than they do on a conscious human being? Contradictions such as these lead many pro-choice people to believe that pro-lifers are close-minded, immovable, radicals. Pro-lifers may say to all of these arguments that any of these situations would be preferable to abortion. The important thing, they believe, is that these children will be living. They say that when a woman goes to get an abortion the fetus is given no choice. But, in effect, what they really are saying is that the power of choice should be taken away from the mothers, giving the unborn child an opportunity to be brought into a loveless, lonely, and uncaring world. It is understandable why people would have moral conflicts over the topic, and that is their right. But let women also have the right. Let them be able to control their b odies and reproduction, and let them have the right to sexual expression other than that prescribed by custom and religion. It is their bodies and their lives, so let them decide. .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb , .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .postImageUrl , .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb , .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:hover , .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:visited , .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:active { border:0!important; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:active , .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u54d06e1383e0f2474348988d10d0c8eb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Georgia Regions Study Guide 3rd GradeWords/ Pages : 1,474 / 24

He shaped this country's course of events, which forever changed the way we live today. Ben Franklin made many contributions to the revolutionary cause. One could say he was one of the greatest fighters in the Revolutionary War. Although he did not fight physically with weapons, he powerfully fought with words. Among many revolutionary contributions, he helped draft and sign the "Declaration of Independence," he secured financial and physical aid from France for the war cause, he lifted many laws that were imposed on the colonies by the King of England, and in 1787, and he signed "The Constitution of the United States of America." When he met with the assembly meeting over the "Declaration of Independence," he addressed the delegates with the statement, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately." During the French and Indian War, he supplied General Braddock and his men with 150 wagons and 259 horses so he could march on Fort Duquesne. Ben Franklin led a small group of soldiers along with his son to Gnadenhuetten to build a fort to protect Pennsylvania from the French and Indian invaders. Within a few weeks, he had three well-fortified forts spaced out over 15 miles and suitable living quarters for the men. If Ben Franklin had not participated in the politics of the American Revolution, the Americans could have easily lost the war. When he went to France to secure financial and physical aid for the war cause, it gave more power to the Americans, which probably led them to win the war. If he had not gone to England to lift the taxes, that could have mean that more British troops most likely would have been sent over to make people pay taxes, which could have lengthened the war. Had he not participated in the war, it most likely would have changed the outcome of the war. It was very interesting the way that Franklin came up with and proved that electricity came from lightning. In 1752, he and his son Billy set out on a stormy night to prove the electricity was generated by lightning. He took a kite and attached a long ribbon to the end of it. He tied a key on the ribbon, about 7 feet away from the bottom, and was flying it as close as he could get it to the clouds. Franklin waited for lightning to strike the kite, which would pass down the ribbon to the key. Then, it struck! He touched the key, and he felt that stinging feeling of a shock! He was right, lightning did generate electricity!! He waited for it to happen again, and he put a special jar around the key, which will trap the electricity inside. Once the electricity was in the jar, he touched it and he fell back to the ground. He was right! Soon after the experience, Ben went to tell his colleagues who had worked on the study with him. To learn more about Ben Franklin would be a great idea. He was one of the leading statesmen in the new America and was a historical figure who shaped our nations history. He was a very bright and intelligent man who could enlighten anyone in many areas of learning. He was an inventor who came up with many ideas which are taken for granted today, such as the post office, or the library, or the fire department, he introduce methods of street paving and lighting, and he found ways to correct the excessive smoking of chimneys. Not too many people know of all the things he invented, and most people would probably be interested in learning about the things he invented or thought of. By reading The story of Benjamin Franklin by Enid Lamonte Meadowcraft, the reader learns of the things that Ben Franklin had invented, or the many Revolutionary contributions he made, or that he signed the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and helped draft the "Declaration of Independence." The reader would also learn that Ben was a modest man from Boston who had moved to Philadelphia and worked up into the highest ranks in Philadelphia and became loved by everyone in Philadelphia and all of the colonies. I would recommend The Story of Benjamin Franklin by Enid Lamonte Meadowcraft to third through fourth graders

Religion Role in Douglass Narrative Story

Religion Role in Douglass Narrative Story Frederick Douglass was a slave in America where there were a lot of inequalities between the slaveholders and the slaves. Slaves were mistreated in terms of being whipped, not given enough to eat, poor resting conditions as their bed was just the floor; generally slaves hardly received the basic needs from their masters.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Religion Role in Douglass Narrative Story specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Both parties happened to believe and claim to practice the same religion- Christianity. One fails to understand why the inequalities and yet they both practiced the same faith. Religion therefore as presented in Douglass narrative story serves two roles; basically the symbolic functions and the narrative functions. This discussion therefore is inclusive of role played by religion in depth as the Christianity of the white south contrast to that of the black slave. To start with, religion has been used to justify the suffering of the black slaves. The religious slaveholders oppressed the slaves as they argued that God admitted for the slave existence when He cursed Ham. This is found in the Christian teachings as they used the bible as their guide. According to the scripture in the book of Genesis chapter 9 verses 24, Ham was cursed by the father Noah after he had seen the nakedness of his father and failed to cover him but instead told it to his brothers. Ham was then cursed into the bondage of slavery thus the whites believed that they were right in the practice of slavery (Douglass 11). According to the Christian teachings, God gave the masters power to discipline their servants if they failed to do as they were commanded. This is well illustrated when a crippled woman received a severe whip when she failed to do as she was commanded by her master. In these two instances and many others, the teachings from the bible were used to the exercise of more cruel acts. Douglass h owever does not blame the religiosity which is on the Christian teachings in the slavery acts which they faced, but he instead gives thanks to God with the full knowledge that the religion where he practiced Christianity was based on good morals (Douglass 32). Douglass and other slaves practice of Christianity contrasts with the Christianity that is practiced by the slaveholders. The Christianity practiced by the black slaves is represented as the Christianity that is inexistence of purity, complete in peace in it, and also it serves as the full representation of the nature of Christ Himself and thus carrying out the activities in unity. Unity was present when Douglass held on the good spirit of letting his fellow slaves learn how to read and even offering his time to teach them.Advertising Looking for essay on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Slaves’ Christianity does not support any corru pt deals, oppression through the act of slave holding or cruelty but instead, slaves continually believe and pray to God for their redemption. It is also against women whipping and any other form of whipping as they present a pure Christianity. Christianity is therefore a saving grace to slaves (Douglass 18). On the other hand, Christianity represented by the slaveholders who were the whites from the south, is a hypocritical kind of Christianity. They offer prayers to God, hold Christians activities like preaching and keeping the Sabbath. They at the same time honor the Christmas period where Christians cerebrates the birth of their Lord Jesus Christ and the New Year as a sigh of appreciating God for His mercies to have them see the New Year. One would automatically think that out of these Christian practices, they would at least show some good spirit in their deeds but instead they continue to oppress slaves. They even fail to give them enough food where they themselves have plenty to eat. According to Christian teachings, every person should actually love his or her neighbor and treat her of him in the best way possible. This is however not the case with the whites south. The white slave holders have all through misused the Christianity institution as they take it for their advantages in gaining their selfish gains. One fails to understand why they do misrepresent Christianity. For instance, they used to give the slaves holidays during the Christmas and the New Year period. One might assume that they did it out of good spirit so that slaves could have at least some time to rest. In fact this is however not right as the slave holders in their canning ways, planned on how slaves could get more drunk during this period where Christianity do not advocate drunkenness. They did this through betting with the slaves so as they could compete on who was able to drink a lot of whisky and still remain in soberness for a longer period. All what they enjoyed in, was to se e slaves misuse what they had saved. Douglass has spent much of his writing illustrating much on the main religion which is Christianity. He does this to show how much slavery and Christianity at any time can not be said to be compatible. Christianity cannot be inexistence wherever slavery is present as slavery is an act that promotes inequalities in the human being treatment and lack of humanity. Religiosity portrayed in Christianity advocate for love and thus wherever slavery is practiced, this virtue is absent. The fact is Christianity religion is highly affected by the presence of slavery.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Religion Role in Douglass Narrative Story specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More There is therefore a direct opposite kinds of life as what is illustrated in the Douglass writing that are lived by the both parties: slaves and their masters in terms of social life and the practical part of it, thus bri nging out some differences in their spiritual lives. He therefore uses the juxtaposition of Christianity in the emphasis that there can still be a true Christianity rather than the representation of the hypocritical one (Douglass 18). In conclusion, it is clearly evidenced that religion which is presented in the form of Christianity plays a very significant role in the entire Douglass story. It is illustrated as a means of serving individual’s need, monetary aspects, and political values just for a group portion and not to the liberty of all. All these facts do not demoralize Douglass and his colleagues who were slaves in the belief concerning Christianity. In fact, they considered searching the will and the knowledge of God through reading instead of performing other acts like drinking of whisky which would on the other hand displease God. They wanted just to be different rather than the act of calling themselves Christians and yet they do against God’s will. Christia nity religion is therefore presented by the slaveholders as their reverence when defending their cruel acts where as to the slaves; it is the only source of consolation especially unto their souls. In difficult times, they believed God for His mercies and deliverance. Douglass, Frederick. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. New York: Prestwick House Inc, 2005.

Business research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Business - Research Paper Example This strategy was a part of the nation’s attempt to maintain the targeted exchange rate value of its domestic currency against a basket of major and influential currencies in the world. Despite a few reports about illegal resource transfers across international premises, the Chinese managed to keep a major proportion of their total stock of financial resources with themselves through profound government intervention (Morrison, 2009). The hypothesis testing conducted in the previous section, in connection with the susceptibility of Chinese firms to impacts of the crisis, also found an insignificant effect of the same. In fact, the subtle truth is that, even though the Chinese experienced hardships on account of the financial distress, they were far better off than what the Western economies felt, where recession was declared officially. As far as statistics are concerned, the Bank of China, the largest nationalised commercial bank in the nation, was responsible for a total of $10.8 billion amount of investment in US owned mortgage-backed securities, nearly 3.5% of its total investment securities portfolio in 2006. Although this figure fell down to 1.4% by the end of 2008, yet, according to Fitch Ratings, this was the highest figure among all other Asian financial institutions (Chim, 2007). The investment into securities was a consequence of excessive stocking of US financial assets, which amounted to a sum of $2.13 trillion as on June 2009, in order to keep its exchange rate floating at the targeted level, compared to that of US dollars. The Chinese government considered it wiser to invest in US securities rather than holding such a huge quantity of money idle (Morrison & Labonte, 2009). The exposure of the Chinese economy to US financial securities however, was not limited to just mortgage backed securities; rathe r there were huge investments of Chinese renminbi on credit

Discussion 3 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Discussion 3 - Assignment Example I think one does not have to be a nutritionist to differentiate between starving and dieting. My uncle and I are very close, more like friends. He has done doctorate in comparative religions. Once, I fell ill. He came to see me. He said, â€Å"I am a doctor, doctors can cure illness in patients, so I can cure your illness.† I took it as a joke because it was meant to be one. It was a poor argument as it was not deductively valid. While it was true that he is a doctor, and that doctors can cure illness in patients, the conclusion that he could cure my illness was false as he was a doctor of comparative religions, not a medical doctor. My mother often says that every person has equal mind and intelligence and thus can score the highest in academics, but I find disagree with her saying that different people have different IQ levels. When I say so, she becomes emotional and says, â€Å"None of my children has a lower IQ level than any other. I know my children. They are all very brainy. Period.† I find this argument very poor as my brother is very weak in studies whereas my academic performance is much better than his. By saying that all her children are very brainy, my mother tries to make emotional appeal. Once I was on a weight-loss plan. I was following a particular diet pattern, which was based on balanced meals. I was taking both vegetables and meat with certain limits on both. My brother told me to leave consuming meat altogether and instead drink more of fresh juices. I disagreed because fresh juices contain a lot of natural sugars and drinking too much of them is not recommendable in a weight-loss plan, but my brother said, â€Å"Go ask anybody. He would recommend you to drink fresh juices to lose weight.† I know there is a lot of misconception about the effects of fresh juice consumption on weight. I find this argument poor as it is an example of ad populum. Drinking a lot of water is recommended

Discussion of the history of cosmetics Essay Example for Free

Discussion of the history of cosmetics Essay The dawn of modern cosmetics began divided into the following categories: Grolier (2005: 188-191). a. Powders face powder usually contains talk, chalk, kaolin, and mixtures of zinc oxide, titanium oxide and various powdered pigments. Properly prepared, this mixture spreads easily, adheres to the skin, and absorbs some moisture. b. Emulsions these are fine particles of oil dispersed in water. Vanishing creams and cold creams are examples of emulsions. Thinner emulsions, which contain more water relative to the oil content, are used as cleansing lotions and hand creams. c. Lipsticks this is made up of oils, such as castor oil, mixed with waxes and pigments or dyes, and hardened into molds. Since the materials used in manufacturing lipsticks are actually taken into the body, the choice of ingredients is limited to those which are known or assumed to be non-toxic. d. Eye Makeup these are eyebrow pencils, eye shadow, and mascara are, like lipstick, compounds of oil, wax and pigments. They, too, must be made of non-toxic or non-injurious materials. Cosmetics have come a long way in modern history and played a significant role in adorning both men and women for various occasions. It has been so widely-used that its functions have traversed into extremes for beautification purposes – it can either conceal or flaunt an asset of a person. It can serve as mask or a highlighter. This just means that it has the ability to change the appearance of the person according to the manner it was used. At the end of the day, personal psyche dictates that every person intends or strives to become pleasant to the eyes of the millions of people around him or her. What is beautiful has also changed over the years. The definition of what is beautiful goes across regions, beliefs, religion and societal perceptions. Burke (2003:75-77): According to the twentieth century philosopher Charles Hartshorne, â€Å"Beauty is the centerpiece of this classical trinity and that nothing in our experience is exempt from the touch of the beautiful†. Beyond aesthetics, what is beautiful is how one perceives it to be, in that if he or she can find beauty in there. Therefore, the quality of what is beautiful has emerged from mere prettiness or elaborate ornamentation into an instrument of life towards survival in the continuous evolution of life in this planet. It can be found that the link between biology and beauty has dictated the development of humans and other species. Scientific studies strengthens the debate that the beautiful will emerge as the survivors given that their counterparts find them more attractive than the rest and that they are perceived to produce the most beautiful offsprings. In this biological quest for a successful and healthy reproduction process, the preference is indeed given to those mates who appear healthy. A healthy individual is visually manifested in their skin and hair, by the movement of their body, by a proportioned and toned body. These are the people judged to be beautiful. If the experts are correct in these assumptions or scientific observations, men usually look for women who appear young and fertile. This is where cosmetics leverage onto. Burke (2003:75-77): The cosmetic industry tries to address this so-called â€Å"need† that women continue to appear young despite already going beyond their fertile or child-bearing years. Nevertheless, beyond the need to reproduce our genes, the core of beauty still delves on the ability of a person to identify and bring out the beauty in their lives. We need not generate only life in this world, but also generate beauty that will make life even more worthwhile. It is the appreciation of beauty in our surroundings even without the use of any form of artificial adornment such as cosmetics that will enable one to realize the beauty of life, that it is worth-knowing and worth living after all. Given how important the nation for beauty is perceived across nations, and beyond borders, how cosmetics value this perception and its effects to the human well-being is crucial. Dermatological diseases have sprung in the recent years that come in a range from minor cosmetic problems to even life-threatening problems, as displayed in some disorders commonly due to skin differentiation processes. Zeeuwen (2004:176). With this statement, one should also be vigilant and be a knowledgeable end-user of these products that attempt to change certain elements of your natural state of appearance or being to some extent. The law of economics reminds us that with in every level of quality increased, price is directly affected as it is directly correlated.

Evening With A Pagan :: essays research papers

An Evening with the Pagans~ A brief history of paganism~ Over 25,000 years ago, our ancestors across the continent practiced an ancient form of religion known as paganism. During the Neolithic and Paleolithic time era, our ancestors were in awe of the great manifestations of nature. Due to lack of scientific thought, they were riddled with ignorance and superstition. Everything had a supernatural explanation. They associated each naturalistic phenomena with a type of god, inscribing inanimate objects with life -like characteristics .This practice is referred to as animism. Every element ,be it thunder ,rain or the sun ,was thought to be a god (or goddess) within it. Eventually their gods became an object of worship   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  known as polytheism. Eventually many forms of polytheism evolved to what is known as paganism. Modern Paganism Now defined as :The worship of a god or goddess whose roots are in pre-Christian Western Europe. Modern paganism is alive and well today. It consists of many sub-divisions .These include ~Wicca ,druidism Santeria and many others. Wicca focuses on the worship of a god and goddess .In Wicca ,there is a plethora of pantheon of deities that one can choose from including: Greek, Norse ,roman etc...... Focusing on a Greek Wiccan tradition ,this will be describing the pagan festival of Hectare. The Festival of Hecate The festival of Hecate is celebrated between the 3rd and 4th Saturday of August. (which ever is closest to the new moon) It is in honor of the Greek goddess Hecate. She was first worshipped in ancient Greece -called the triple goddess of magic. She is often represented in triple form ; maiden (youth) ,mother (fertility) and crone (the wise woman). In ancient Rome ,she was known as trevia ,the cross road with three paths. Hecate is symbolized by the phases of the moon. Each attribute correlates with a particular phase of the moon. The waxing moon (maiden),the full moon (mother) and the new moon( crone). The Ceremony~ Upon arrival at the festival in Georgetown Delaware, everyone gathers for the lecture. This is to educate the newcomers as to what the ceremony entails. The ceremony is always rehearsed before it is performed. After the lecture ,there is a large potluck feast to keep everyone energized for the evenings festivities. The processional~ When the sun sets, the processional begins. With everyone in their appropriate magical attire,(consisting of a robe and jewelry) everyone lines up proceeds with the first phase. This is called consecration- each person is consecrated . This is done by covering the body in incense smoke and sprinkling of water. This is a purification process that cleanses the body of negative

Digital Marketing in India

* MARKETING ASSIGNMENT * â€Å"DIGITAL MARKETING INDIAN SCENARIO† SUBMITTED BY:- MAHENDRA KUMAR SEC. :- C ENROLL:- 12BSP0623 DIGITAL MARKETING Digital marketing is an addressable marketing method where relevant marketing communications are delivered to individuals through the e-mail, Web, and mobile channels using an e-mail address, a Web browser cookie, and a mobile phone number. Live scenario of digital marketing in India Digital marketing is still at its initial phase in India. Most of the companies are still thinking to adopt the medium while many top brands have already rolled their digital marketing campaign.Seeing the large number of youth population in India  (More than 40% of total population of India, around 460 millions youth is there, in which 333 millions are literate)  and the rising technology savvy young generation, corporate will be more than happy to engage the target audience and spread their products & services among them via digital media. Thus there w ill be a Big Change in coming future. Indian digital marketing scenario has changed tremendously after the it boom, India with 60,000,000 internet users provides a very good platform for online marketing. Also with a growth rate of over 1000% the potential looks good too. The penetration is a mere 5. 2% – but which is actually good. The cream of the society – the people most likely to have pockets deep enough to trade or make purchases online are among the 5. 2% of the population. This makes targeting these high-end profiles easier & your leads are more likely to be converted. However, one area of concern is the support operations that help convert the leads into sales. These are mainly call centres & back offices that are responsible for following up on the leads that are provided to them. But the staffs at these organizations in India is many a times not that well trained for digital marketing & usually the high potential leads are lost due to inability of the staff to convince the lead. The lead is mostly very expensive. They get one lead after incurring a huge cost through a lot of clicks. Hence, more than educating internet users it would be vital to train the support teams so as to consolidate the current amount of leads that you are getting. Otherwise, we many end up in a situation where we have high demand, high potential but inadequately trained staff to service the lead While in many countries Digital Media course has emerged as one of the mainstream degree but here in India it is still under the control of digital media agencies who took the initiative to teach people on Digital Marketing with live projects. †¢ Many of the premier business schools are in a positing (of course seeing the demand) to run the digital marketing program. But most of them are running short of the quality faculties. Further insights have revealed that an average Indian spends 45 minutes on Facebook   in a day.The huge number of smart phone users with apps adds up further to the consumer base for brands to interact and take opportunities. The recent hit of the â€Å"Kolaveri Di† song, reaching more than 50 million users globally is a measure of the impact and spread of internet. Conclusion The digital media playing field in quite huge providing accommodation to a list of brands, but yet to be utilized to its fullest potential. This year the marketers need to take the online test for their brands and get rewarded with the vast target market to be acquired.Digital marketing –Reality Byte Obviously, social media is important/highly efficient and holds the potential for building better relationships with communities of consumers/customers. Traditional marketing (i. e. advertising/promotion/PR) historically placed a premium on awareness building and transactions, but has declined in importance due to a combination of message clutter, time pressed consumers, fragmentation of media and the growth of people using the internet t o research what others are saying about products/companies.Nevertheless, what really concerns me is how â€Å"tactical† social media has become in recent years and less â€Å"strategic†. It appears almost everyone on the social media provider side keeps looking for the latest tool/technique * Most companies do recognize the need to adopt new ways to reach consumers and build better relationships (i. e. websites, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, mobile marketing, etc. ). Very efficient, free/cheap, and can easily measure traffic/activity Even the mighty Proctor & Gamble is redeploying marketing spend away from traditional media to digital since it’s more efficient and less costly. They announced recently they will lay off 1,600 people and are banking on digital ROI for long term savings. However, I bet P&G is also developing the internal infrastructure to capture the data and share it with relevant internal business groups to help change their business models. *  Th e companies like HUL, P&G, NOKIA etc are usually spend >20% of their budgets on social media and in digital marketing Example for digital marketing:-PepsiCo adopts innovative ways for digital marketing in India GURGAON: food and beverage major PepsiCo is adopting innovative methods in India to tap the potential of  social media  for building  brand equity  and increase sales PepsiCo is not look at digital medium strictly from the lens of advertising spends, but approach it in an innovative manner. † Citing the example of how the firm used Facebook during the cricket World Cup last year, â€Å"Pepsi's Facebook campaign was the most recognised brands during the event. they also got an award from FB on that.So we are using social media in a big way here for building brand equity. † It is extremely important for brands to have a direct relationship with their consumers and not simply outsource it to an agency alone, PepsiCo â€Å"Digital media should be used for re al time marketing and we use this medium both for brand building and generating sales, PepsiCo uses multiple agencies to handle digital media account for different brands and products in India. Conclusion :- Finally, using social media/digital marketing tactics exclusively is probably not a good idea.A good business strategy will probably require a blend of BOTH traditional marketing and social media/digital marketing. We must remember digital marketing is a â€Å"slow burn† approach and in some cases won’t help building critical mass quickly. In some cases traditional advertising or promotions will help jump start a strategy while social/digital marketing will help build the brand in the long run. Using both to some degree is the best way to â€Å"EFFECTIVELY† grow your business, but again it needs to be driven by strategy and not the latest tool/technique.

Back-to-School Student Questionnaire

One of the challenges of starting a new school year is getting acquainted with your students. Some students are friendly and talkative right away, while others may be shy or reserved. Provide students with a back-to-school questionnaire to learn more about each student in your class. You can also combine student questionnaires with other icebreakers during the first week of school. Sample Student Questions The following questions are some examples to consider including in your own questionnaire. Modify the questions to suit your students grade level. If you need a second opinion, run your questionnaire draft by an administrator or a fellow teacher. You dont need to have students answer every question, though you might want to give them an incentive to participate. And remember, students want to get to know you better, too—so fill out a questionnaire of your own and distribute it. Personal Details What is your full name?Do you like your name?
